Currently, I am head of „Slavicus” – Centre for Corpus and Experimental Research on Slavic Languages at the University of Wrocław. My academic career has been inextricably connected with the Institute of English Studies at the University of Wrocław ever since I graduated from here with the MA degree in English Philology in 1982. Before that, in 1979, I also obtained a MSc degree in Computer Science at the University of Technology in Wrocław. Of utmost importance for my future development as a theoretical linguist was my stay at the Department of Linguistics, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where I was a doctoral student in 1984–1987. I defended my PhD dissertation Thematic Constraints on selected constructions in English and Polish at my mother University in 1988. My post-doctoral degree was awarded in 1998 for the habilitationsschrift Towards a Unified Theory of Nominalizations. External and Internal Eventualities. In 2019, I was granted the title of full professor by the President of Poland.
For almost 30 years, I have been the head of the Department of English and Comparative Linguistics at the Institute of English Studies. In the years 1999–2005, I was a Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Philology and since 2019, I have been Chair of the Linguistics Discipline Council at the University of Wrocław. For several years, I was an expert of the Polish Accreditation Committee and an expert of the National Science Centre.
On the international level, I delivered numerous papers at international linguistic conferences and guest lectures on invitation in leading linguistic centers in Europe and the USA. In 2001, as a senior Fulbright scholar, I spent 9 months on a research visit at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, USA. In 2010, I was the president of the leading international linguistic society Generative Linguists of the Old World (GLOW) and the organizer of the GLOW conference at the University of Wrocław. In 2015–2020, I was the principal investigator of an international research project entitled Comparative analysis of psychological predicates in Polish, Spanish and English under the OPUS grant from the National Science Centre, culminating in the monograph Beyond Emotions in Language. Psychological verbs at the interfaces published by John Benjamins Publishing Company in the series Linguistik Aktuell/Linguistics Today (LA).
My research focuses on the syntax-semantics interface in generative tradition, in particular within the area of psychological predicates and nominalizations in cross-linguistic perspective, with particular emphasis put on Polish as compared to other languages. I have published numerous papers in various journals, including Journal of Slavic Linguistics, Acta Linguistica Academica, Studies in Polish Linguistics, Poznań Studies in Contemporary Linguistics, Anglica Wratislaviensia and book chapters in Academic Press, John Benjamins, Wiley-Blackwell and Oxford University Press, among others.
Apart from my fascination with linguistics, I am also a passionate lover of the Argentine tango, its magic music and its universal rule-governed dancing language.
